What does a postpartum doula really do?

What is a postpartum doula?

A postpartum doula is a woman who cares for the mother and her family after the birth of a new baby.

She is a wise woman who has deep knowledge about the importance of sacred postpartum time, and she utilizes that wisdom to assist and facilitate the most easeful, blissful early weeks of motherhood as possible.

The doula has specific training on how to care for the mother as she recovers from labor and delivery as well as training in newborn care.

The doula will provide guidance and education to the mother and assist with household tasks, newborn care, birth story processing, information on physiologically optimal postpartum healing and newborn care, hands-on touch, cooking, and more.

Why not just hire a housekeeper and a babysitter?

In addition to attending to the basic needs of the family, the doula is specifically equipped with skills to provide emotional and spiritual support which facilitates the mother’s well-being and fostering attachment to her baby during this vulnerable time.

While the basic physical needs must be met, the ultimate goal is for the mother and family to develop a bond that sets the stage for a thriving family life.

A postpartum doula’s focus is to ensure that the mother is well-nourished and cared for.

The mother is the source of nourishment and comfort for the entire family.

Young breastfeeding babies depend on her for their survival, small children look to the mother for emotional and nervous system regulation, older children look to their mom for reassurance and guidance, and in the newborn period, fathers look to the mother to take the lead on newborn care.
