Moving to Charlotte With Kids: Why We Chose to Come Home After Life in New York City
At Queen City Doulas, we often connect with families who are navigating major life transitions all at once: welcoming a new baby, adjusting to early parenthood, and sometimes relocating to a new city entirely. For families moving to Charlotte with kids, the decision often goes far beyond real estate. It’s about lifestyle, support systems, and long-term sustainability.
In this guest post, Aleks Manucharov from eXp Realty shares his family’s journey from New York City back to Charlotte and why choosing balance ultimately shaped their next chapter.
My Charlotte Roots
I grew up in Matthews, and as most people from Charlotte know, “Charlotteans” are considered unicorns because most people here are transplants. As of late 2025, the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance reported that around 157 people move to the Greater Charlotte area every day, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States.
I moved out of Charlotte when I met my wife, who is from the New York/New Jersey area, and we lived in Brooklyn until we had our second child. The city was energizing, fast-paced, and full of opportunity. My wife and I loved our time there as we were in the early stages of growing our family, and it shaped us in meaningful ways.
As a family of four with kids 18 months apart, our perspective began to change. The things that once made city life exciting began to feel heavy. After having both children during the peak of COVID, moving back to Charlotte with our kids started feeling ideal for so many reasons.
Why Charlotte Works So Well for Families
Charlotte offers a rare blend of an exciting city with a family-centered lifestyle. Life feels more balanced here. When you are a parent, it sometimes feels like the city was built for families because of the plethora of activities, events, resources and communities all around.
Coming back felt familiar, but it also felt new. Charlotte has evolved in all the right ways. There are so many great neighborhoods, strong schools, and growing food and culture scenes, all while maintaining the qualities that make it such a solid place to raise a family.
A typical weekend with young kids might look like…
- An early morning workout for parents while the kids enjoy activities and playtime at Lifetime Fitness
- Checking out the newly opened Copain bakery to grab croissants on a sunny Saturday morning
- Dancing outdoors to live music by the Jolly Lollies
- Picking strawberries and enjoying wood-fire pizza at Wise Acres Organic Farm
- And then hopping over to a seasonal festival like the Charlotte International Arts Festival
…All while meeting tons of other families from all over the nation that also just moved to Charlotte!
Charlotte also has a mild, four-season climate that makes it easy to enjoy life outdoors year-round. It felt like our quality of life was instantly upgraded just from being able to live in the sunshine and never having to wear a parka again.
Charlotte Neighborhoods Feel Like Communities
One of the things I value most about Charlotte is how neighborhood-driven it is. People know their neighbors. Kids play outside. Each Charlotte neighborhood has its own personality, and finding the right one matters just as much as finding the right home.
For families expecting or newly postpartum, proximity to support and healthcare can be just as important as school zones.
I specialize in helping families relocate by taking the time to understand what matters most to them, from daily routines to long-term goals, and matching them with neighborhoods that truly fit their lifestyle. I always encourage families to explore areas they’re considering by visiting local grocery stores, coffee shops, and nearby schools to get a real feel for everyday life there.
A More Sustainable Cost of Living as a Family
Charlotte isn’t inexpensive, but it offers something New York rarely does: sustainability. Housing, childcare, and everyday expenses feel more manageable, which allows families to think long-term; savings, activities, and future plans instead of simply getting through the month. That financial breathing room makes a real difference when raising kids.
Families comparing cities often benefit from using tools like a mortgage payment calculator to get a general sense of what their monthly expenses in Charlotte may look like. That said, I always recommend connecting with a trusted local lender for the most accurate numbers, and I’m happy to share recommendations for lenders I know and trust!
What I Wish More NYC Families Knew About Moving to Charlotte With Kids
My wife initially had a difficult time transitioning from life in New York to Charlotte. It took time to realize that choosing Charlotte did not mean giving up ambition, culture, or opportunity. It meant choosing balance. Charlotte today is dynamic, growing, and full of families who made the same decision we did, often for very similar reasons.
As Charlotte has grown into a true melting pot of transplants, it’s become a place where building community feels natural. With so many people new to the city, there’s a genuine openness to forming connections, relationships, and getting involved in activities that matter to you.
That sense of openness, like what you’ll find in local Charlotte support groups with Queen City Doulas, is something many families lean into during pregnancy and early parenthood, when connection matters most.
My Final Thoughts
Moving to Charlotte with kids wasn’t, for us, about slowing down; it was about more about building a life that felt enjoyable, supported, and sustainable. It’s a place where families can thrive, not just manage.
For families considering a move to Charlotte with kids, as a real estate agent I offer insight shaped by personal experience and local expertise. I work closely with families to match them with neighborhoods that align with how they want to live, grow, and raise their children.
